Karabela sword or Polish Saber symbolizes an epoque of our history.
For a long time this type of sabre was considered to be not suited for combat. What is more, our researchers were unsure of what the name actually meant for people of the era.
It was suggested that the name referred to all heavily embroidered sabres worn to a fancy clothing.
It was the Stowarzyszenie miłośników broni i barwy from Kraków, who eventually labelled it as the specific eagle-head handle design.
Origin of the word are also shrouded in mystery. There are several hypothesis in this regards, since many Polish researchers point out to its Turkish origin, but as well there are Turkish specialists underlining the Polish origin.
Sabre itself is a very intriguing eastern style sabre, having a very distinct hilt can be seen in many forms, with either great simplicity or embellishment. It was used widely in Polish republic, Ottoman empire and Hungary in late 17th and 18th century. Ottomans did not stop using it till late 19th.

Karabela Sword – Polish Sabre – 18th Century Replica

The Karabela Polish Sword Saber from SwordRep stands out as a finely crafted tribute to the iconic 18th-century Polish sabre. Designed with a custom Karabela-style hilt, this sword offers a precise, ergonomic fit, tailored to your hand and grip preferences. Its lightweight build, between 900–1100 grams, doesn’t compromise its solid blade presence. Despite its weight, it handles with authority and strikes hard when needed.

The blade’s well-spatulated point and excellent flexibility make it safe for thrusting, while the thick edge ensures a satisfying feel for powerful cuts. The combination of lightness and balance allows for swift, controlled wrist moulinets, making it a weapon that feels alive in your hands. Sparring with it demands caution, as its speed and presence make it a formidable choice.

SwordRep pays exceptional attention to the hilt, which they aptly describe as the “user interface.” By consulting directly via email or WhatsApp, you can provide details about your fencing style, hand size, and even preferred gauntlets. Sending a photo of your grip ensures the hilt is customized to fit perfectly, enhancing both comfort and functionality.

This reproduction is more than just a display piece—it’s a fully functional sabre designed for enthusiasts. The handmade nature of the sword adds character, with minor imperfections that enhance its authenticity. It cuts exceptionally well, slicing through tatami mats with remarkable ease and precision.

Technical Highlights:

  • 31-inch blade starts off at 66 mm thick, tapering to 4.5 at the yelman, then the thickness nosedives to 3 mm and tapers steadily to the tip
  • The handle is fantastically comfortable. It indexes well and the bird’s head shape locks in the pinky.
  • It’s very much a handmade object (not in a bad way). If machine perfection is what you want, this ain’t it
