Description
Kikoku is a large version of the typical Japanese sword type known as Trafalgar Law’s sword. It’s only one of the swords in one piece that is cursed. It has an oblong-shaped hand guard coated with short white fur, sheathed in a black scabbard decorated by white crosses from the opening to the bottom, and with a small piece of red rope tied near its opening.
Trafalgar Law’s Kikoku, the cursed sword, symbolizes his quest for vengeance and justice, influenced by his haunted past and the sacrifice of those who cared for him.
BACKGROUND OF LAW’S SWORD
Trafalgar Law’s signature sword, Kikoku, carries a rich background deeply rooted in the tragic circumstances of his early life. Born in the mining country of Flavin’s, Law’s childhood in the town of Lavance was marred by generational poisoning caused by the substance they were mining, known as amber lead. This poisonous atmosphere led to extermination squads from neighboring countries, resulting in the death of Law’s parents and sister, Lambie. The looming threat of never reaching adulthood due to the contagious disease left Law with a quiet nihilism and a desire for vengeance against those who had caused his suffering.
In the midst of his dark journey, Law encountered Corazon, a member of the Don Quixote Pirates led by Doflamingo. Corazon’s seemingly hostile actions, such as throwing Law out of a window, were later revealed to be driven by a sense of duty to protect children from entering the dangerous world of Doflamingo. This encounter marked a pivotal moment for Law, influencing his perspective on the complexities of the pirate world.
Kikoku, Law’s cursed sword, becomes a symbolic extension of his quest for vengeance. The katana, with its unique design featuring a white fur guard and a black sheath adorned with white crosses, embodies the pain and determination driving Law forward. It is not merely a weapon for combat but a profound element that adds cultural and emotional depth to Law’s character. Kikoku represents the weight of his past and the resolve that propels him through the challenges of the One Piece world, making it a significant and iconic part of Law’s narrative journey.
About Sword Name
The real meaning of the lost sword Kikoku, the name of the lost sword, can be translated as the lament of a restless ghost. It is inspired by a real Yokai from Japanese mythology, a monster said to wander the world without rest, seeking revenge against the one who took its life. This meaning gives me chills when I think about Law’s past. After the tragedy of his childhood, he encountered the Don Quixote family and Corazon, who would become a father figure to him. After Corazon was killed right in front of Law, he swore to take revenge on Doflamingo with the burning fervor of a relentless ghost. This adds even more cultural significance to Kikoku, the tool with which Law seeks vengeance.
